Safe & Sound in Printers Row

Just Hanni and me, taking a breather on Printers Row in front of Sandmeyers Bookstore.Book CoverThe party begins…Is that a line? I’m blushing!Readers of all ages gathered! And of course, no event would be complete without some of my wonderful family present: Mike, Cheryl, and Flo.When Mike, Hanni and I decided to move from Urbana, Illinois to Chicago in 2003 we looked for a neighborhood that would be friendly, safe, and easy for Hanni and me to navigate.
That’s how we found Printers Row.
Printers Row is a tiny neighborhood in Chicago just south of the Loop. The buildings in our neighborhood were originally used by printing and publishing businesses.
Before electricity, printers used natural light to check their work, so the windows in neighborhood buildings are tall and wide. You know, to let light in. The ceilings are high, too, to accommodate old printing presses. Most of the buildings in Printers Row have been converted into residential lofts. There’s always a lot of activity up and down the street, so I feel safe. When I’m walking around with hanni, I feel like people are looking out for me.
Printers Row is close enough to the Loop that Hanni can walk me to my part-time job at Easter Seals and the weekly writing class I teach for senior citizens at the Chicago Cultural Center.

And so, the neighborhood feels safe, it’s easy to navigate. The last requirement: it had to be friendly.
Trust me, it is. In my previous post I told you about the champagne celebration at our local tavern. Now it’s time to tell you about our local bookstore.
Copies of “Hanni and Beth: Safe and Sound” arrived at Sandmeyer’s Bookstore Wednesday. Ulrich
Sandmeyer called me the minute the books arrived. Mike and I ran right down to admire the box load. One book had already sold by the time we got there – a neighbor had seen Ulrich pulling a copy out of the box and insisted on buying it right away.
“There’s not another book like it,” Ulrich said, marveling at the illustrations inside. “It’s going to sell very, very
well.” To that end, Ulrich immediately placed one copy of Safe & Sound in the front display window.
Ulrich owns the store with his wife Ellen — today she pushed that boxload of books on a pushcart to our friends Pat and Carol’s house on Michigan Avenue. Carol and Pat are the couple who watched Hanni while we were in Poland, you might remember my blog about how much Hanni loved her stay with them. Today Carol and Pat showed their generosity once again, hosting an open house to celebrate the publication of Hanni and Beth: Safe & sound. It was only when I sat down to write this blog post that I remembered: Carol and I met on the street! She had seen an article I wrote for the Chicago Tribune Sunday magazine and recognized me from an accompanying photo. She stopped me on the street afterwards to tell me how much she enjoyed the piece I’d written. We’ve been friends ever since.
I sat with Ellen Sandmeyer at the party, signing, Brailling, and rubber stamping Hanni’s pawprint into books for anyone who wanted to buy one. And lots of people wanted to buy one. Or two! or three! A woman from the writing class I teach even bought SEVEN — she’s in the Safe & sound Frequent Flyer Club now.
Neighbors were there, friends from my book club , my writing group, my senior citizen class came. My sister Cheryl surprised me by bringing Flo to the party — what a delight!
The event was wonderful. My neighbors are great. Once again I was reminded: Mike and I made the right decision when we decided to live in Printers Row.

What a great neighborhood! I want to live there! And I heard Flo thought it would be a nice place to live too!

Beth On October 29, 2007 at 11:11 am

Marilee you are right. The first thing Flo (my Mom) said when she walked into that apartment on Michigan avenue was, “I could live here!”
Hanni and I were the guest stars of the party, but Flo was a very close runner up. Everyone wanted to meet her, and at one point Ellen Sandmeyer, (co-owner
of Sandmeyer’s Bookstore, it’s in our neighborhood) said, “Your mom is beaming.” And if Flo was the runner up, my sister Cheryl, of course, was Miss Congeniality.
The party was such fun, and…WE SOLD OUT OF BOOKS! Some people left orders after the books ran out, I’ll need to run down and sign those when they arrive

YOU GO GIRL! Cannot tell you how cool it was to see you all in your power yesterday at the book signing. Loved the event Beth. It was a pleasure to celebrate your publication in such a beautiful location. Good news that your book sold-out at the event. I know that I left thinking of at least two more people who need to have copies. With a signature from not only you but one that includes HANNI – how can one pass that-up?

Pat and Carol have a beautiful place. It was a wonderful setting to kick off Beth’s lastest publication, “Hanni and Beth: Safe and Sound”. Mom and I enjoyed meeting so many of Beth’s friends from her work, her classes, her book club, and people she actually just met on the corner in her neighborhood. Mom and I had a great time meeting Beth and Mike’s wonderful friends. Your proud sister, Cheryl. P.S.Congratulatios on the Sell-Out!

Thanks, Patricia and Cheryl. It truly was a joyful party. Ulrich Sandmeyer left a message on my machine today — he was manning the store yesterday while Ellen was with us at the party selling books. “I heard you had a lovefest yesterday,” he said. He couldn’t have said it better! He ordered more books already, They will have a number of new ones in tomorrow and hope to have a lot more by the end of the week — check out the store, it’s as wonderful as the owners are, and it’s located on the west side of Dearborn between Harrison and Polk.
And you are both right, Patricia and Cheryl — Pat and Carol’s place was a LOVELY setting for a book launch party. I am still on Cloud Nine.

Oh dear Beth — How good to see you again — in such lush surroundings — how elegantly you fit into them. Thank your friends for the party and thank you for the book. Can hardly wait for your next one. love, mgk

You may think I’m just being a proud mom, but I must say the pictures are wonderful, and you looked truly beautiful. The event was not only in an amazing home with a breath-taking view, it was full of warmth and love. Your family, friends, and fans were so proud of you (and Hanni’s) creation. And, by the way, my order arrived yesterday!
Love, Laurie

Loved the party and wished we could have stayed longer before heading off to Clara’s concert. What a cute picture of her, with friend Lydia on your blog! The girls enjoyed it too. I am thrilled that you ran out of books. And thanks to your hosts, who have an amazing space. I am wondering when the next party might be! Hah! All good fun. I am sharing the news of your book with everyone I now because it will make such an excellent gift for the holidays . . .

Laurie and Gretchen, What fun to get two comments in a row from women who are proud of their daughters — as well you should be. Everyone is commenting on the lovely photos, adn those are just a few that Kaitlin rushed to me Sunday night to post with the blog entry — wait until she sends the rest.
And isn’t it cool how beautiful we all look when we’re happy?
Laurie, I’m so happy to hear you received your book order, and Gretchen, thanks for spreading the good word!

Mary, I love your positive attitude — you can’t wait for my “next book”! I have a feeling I could be at a book launch party for *your* next book before my next one comes out. I’ll bring the champagne…

Abraham, Grace, and I are prancing around, happy for your success and continued outreach. 🙂

Does “Grace” live up to her name when you are prancing around?
