That's Hanni and me at Daniel Street School in Lindenhurst, NY.

Is it March 31 already!? Seems like an April Fool’s joke! This sure has been a busy – and rewarding — month for Hanni and Beth: Safe & Sound. In one month, Hanni and I visited five elementary schools, two libraries, one health education center, one teacher education center, and appeared at one author-illustrator night. We traveled by planes, trains and automobiles to New York, Michigan and various Illinois locations. Somehow, we always managed to make it home, you guessed it: safe & sound! While Hanni and I were traveling around talking to folks aboutSafe & Sound, experts behind the scenes were giving our book some attention, too. This month Hanni and Beth: Safe & sound was included on a new American Library Association list of about 25 or so “outstanding books that portray emotional, mental, or physical disability experiences.” It’s a thrill to have our book listed with all those other sensational titles. But the thrill doesn’t end there: in this same month of March, my publisher at Blue Marlin Publications got a message from the kids TV show Martha Speaks at WGBH in Boston. If you’ve never seen Martha Speaks on TV, you can link here to watch videos to see what Martha’s show is like. From the Martha Speaks web site:

Martha Speaks is an animated series on PBS KIDS. Aimed at viewers between the ages of four and seven, Martha’s educational goal is to teach kids new words. Based on the children’s book series by Susan Meddaugh and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the series stars Martha, a beloved family dog. She is accidentally fed alphabet soup — this gives her the power of speech and the chance to speak her mind to anyone that will listen.

The educational outreach program folks from Martha Speaks contacted my publisher to order copies of our book for a new program they’re testing out in Boston and New York City. Our book will be given to students in city schools, and if the pilot program works, a national rollout will feature Safe & Sound online activity guides and other online materials in conjunction with a Martha Speaks recommended book list. So if all goes well, more libraries and other organizations across the country will hear about Hanni and Beth: Safe & Sound — as they say in TVland…stay tuned!

This is cool! I love that Martha Speaks show. Will Hanni get to meet Martha in person?

Sandra Murillo On April 1, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Wow! That’s definitely good news for you and Hanni! I sure hope the pilot program has success!

Sandra

p.s. I’m still waiting on news from U of I! Supposedly all decisions should be made by April 15.

Sandra,
Be *sure* to let me know the MINUTE you find out about University of Illinois in Urbana — April 15 isn’t far away!

Sandra Murillo On April 1, 2009 at 8:11 pm

You know, to someone who has been in suspense for over a month it sure seems like it will never come! *smile*

Beth On April 1, 2009 at 8:19 pm

For what it’s worth, I am feeling *very* positive about your application, Sandra. Heck, they’d be lucky to have you at University of Illinois. If it helps, I’ll have Hanni and her new best friend Martha put in a good word for you….!

Sandra Murillo On April 1, 2009 at 9:13 pm

Great! Tell them I’d appreciate it very much! *laugh*

omg- I just watched Martha today! (I’m on spring break)and I was thinking,” wow that is just like Hanni” telling her story. And Martha looks a little like Hanni- as much as a cartoon can. That would be so awesome if the pilot program works- I am sure that it will!! Here comes Hanni- with her own tv show! or computer program! You’ve had a busy month- is April the same??

bethfinke On April 2, 2009 at 12:01 am

Ah, it would be swell for hanni to get her own TV show some day. For now, though, she’d be content with a guest appearance on martha Speaks! And thankfully, our April is not as busy as March. Not yet, at least — just one elementary school visit scheduled, and a visit to a Montessori School, too. In late April Hanni will be guiding me onto a train so I can travel to McHenry, IL and lead a couple writing workshops at a college there. And then I’m doing a keynote presentation at a college in my hometown: Elmhurst College.
From April 3 until April 22, though, no presentations. Gee, maybe I should take advantage of that time and get started writing that third book…

I told Lydia, age 6, about your connection to Martha Speaks…And She is SO excited for you. She even came up with a story line and everything. Don’t be a fraid to call if you need help coming up with a story for the show!

bethfinke On April 2, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Lydia already has a story line for the show?! A budding writer!

MaryEllen Schneider On April 5, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Wow, that is so exciting, Beth! Shandy and I will be keeping our paws crossed for you.

Beth On April 6, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Thanks! With you & Shandy on our side, we’re *sure* to succeed!
