Only one disappointment about yesterday's Super Bowl

The Super Bowl Shuffle commercial I blogged about last week got edited at the last minute. They cut out Joette’s part! She e-mailed me when the game was over, her subject heading was “boohoo”:

They cut half of the commercial (my half). However you can see the whole thing on the Boost Mobile website.

Those advertisers know exactly what they’re doing, doncha think? They knew all those football fans would be watching the Super Bowl just to see my superstar senior citizen writing student Joette, so they cut her out of the commercial. You know, in order to get everyone to link to the Boost Mobile site. If you can put up with all the cell phone promotion stuff on that site, you’ll be rewarded by seeing the entire shuffle the way it was intended: with Joette included.

I’ll say this: Joette’s commercial appearance (not!) got me paying attention to the Super Bowl from start to finish, something I haven’t done since 1986, when the original Super Bowl Shuffle was all the rage. If you read this blog, you know how much I love New Orleans so with apologies to my nieces Marsha and Susan and their families who live in Indianapolis, I gotta admit: I loved, loved, loved, loved the way that game ended yesterday. Congratulations, New Orleans Saints!

Okay, you liked the game. But what did you think of the halftime show?

Well, i didn’t think The Who was a great choice for halftime performers (in an interview, Roger Daltry & Pete Townsend both admitted they didn’t know much about NFL football) but must admit I was very impressed with Roger Daltrey’s voice — so strong and still a good range, he sounded much the same as he did, gulp, 30+ years ago.

Hmm. Maybe the part of Roger Daltrey’s brain devoted to memory, music and songwriting fills up so much space that he forgets how old he is while he sings. He sounded great, and I heard he doesn’t *look* bad, either —

I am happy that New Orleans won, but my own disappointment is that my own team, Minnesota wasn’t in the Super Bowl. The fact that New Orleans was in the game, makes me feel a bit better about our loss to them.

Beth- What a crack up! I just saw the whole shuffle and loved McMahon on the scooter! We saw part of it last night, and Grant was confused by our laughter. Felt old as we explained the original from 1986! By the way, we prefered the Prince half time show and the outcome of that game a few years ago-big surprise! Marsha

Ah, you bring up yet another one of my favorite cities: Minneapolis, home of my beloved Prince. That Prince halftime show was out of this world — having been a member of a high school marching band (just like you, Marsha) i actually got chills when He had a marching band come out and help his performence. Didn’t care much about who won that year, I usually don’t wattch the teams, just the halftime show. This year was different. Lolly, if it’s any consolation, I watched a total of TWO games in their entirety this year: Saints vs. Colts, and Saints vs. Vikings. Football fans tell me I couldn’t have chosen two more entertaining games this year, the Vikings reminded me of the Colts on Sunday, the way they drove, drove, drove down the field every time they had the ball.
Well, *almost* every time.
