Not the Christmas break I was looking for

January 1, 2016 • Posted in Beth Finke, blindness, Uncategorized, writing by

I fell this past week and broke bones in my left hand. Ouch! Not going to be easy typing blog posts with one hand in a cast, but today, to celebrate the New Year, I thought I’d give it a try with this very short poem.

I've got two fingers for hunting-and-pecking with my left hand, but I stuck with just the right for this work or art.

Right-handed Love Poem

by Beth Finke

I.

My.

Only my & I.

Huh.

Only my & I?

Ummmmm, no you?

No link-up? No hook-up?

Loony! Loopy!

No jolly.

No pop.

No jump.

No joy.

Oy!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…

You & I?

Uh-huh.

You & I.

Jiminy.

You & I!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Beth,
Happy New Year! I love your poem… I found myself rapping to it! You are the most amazing person I have ever met! You take something that is a difficult situation and ALWAYS turn it into a positive one. A cute poem!

I’m so sorry to hear about your hand. Please let me know if I can help out in anyway. I’m just an email and a few blocks away.

Happy New Year to you, Whitney and Mike!!

Beth, my dear .. who needs 10 fingers anyway? Your spirit more than compensates. Get nimble and have a recuperative 2016.

bethfinke On January 1, 2016 at 1:44 pm

O.K. You, too!

So sorry. When something that can move suddenly can’t, it changes everything. I’m looking at a lake that wasn’t frozen last week and now is. But I’m hoping that your hand will be freed long before the spring melt. Also hoping that you have some assistive technology that will take your voice and make it print? Sometimes hoping is the cast that nestles around what is broken and helps it heal.

bethfinke On January 1, 2016 at 10:38 pm

OK Mary your comment motivates me to try some assistive technology. I am dictating this to my iPhone. That last line of yours was poetry. Maybe I’ll learn more about assistive technology from this fall.

Hurrah for that dictation. I won’t be back to Memoir I until February, but I’ll try to keep up with assignments.

Leone Anderson On January 1, 2016 at 3:53 pm

Sorry about your hand. Can you “jump on joy?” You’re amazing, Beth. Thinking of you. Lee

bethfinke On January 1, 2016 at 10:41 pm

Hmmm. OK I jump in hooloo hoop?

Beth, your right hand is a brilliant poet, but I did wonder how you got all those “!!!” exclamation marks in there. Is that where you perched your left finger? Sorry to hear about your broken digits. In time they will be back gobbling up the As, Q’s, Zs and Vs…then you can replace “yummy” with “great” and “we” and “verve” and “edge” as you usually do.

bethfinke On January 1, 2016 at 10:52 pm

OK mailed this comment requires me to use my assistive technology again. You are right I’m busted. I did perch my pointer finger over the! To use the left-hand side of the keyboard Mia Kulpa. In case anyone’s wondering to use the assistive technology and the iPhone I am not using Siri.

recent iPhones have a little microphone picture on the keyboard right to the left of the . Recent iPhones have a little microphone picture it on the keyboard right to the left of the . At least that’s what I hear that you sighted people see there? That’s the dictation mode so if you tap on that you can talk to your iPhone to respond to texts and emails. Give it a try

Beth, I€™am so sorry to hear about your fall & broken hand… yikes! How will you work with Whitney?! On the other hand… grin, I really enjoyed your poem. It’s light & fun, just what I needed today. Thank you for that & a happy & healing 2016 to you Mike &Gus!

bethfinke On January 1, 2016 at 11:09 pm

oh Pam that’s what’s making me the most sad about this left-hand break. I have been trying to hold onto Whitney’s harness with my pointer finger and thumb but it’s not working. Thank goodness she is six years old and is pretty set in her seeing-eye dog Waze. I’m afraid she will have to take a few weeks off work along with me. I am confident when we get back to work will take off right where we left off

If you dictated “ways,” your iPhone filled in with capital-W “Waze,” which is a software GPS program that helps you get around traffic jams. That’s a good metaphor for having to find new ways after your fall.

bethfinke On January 5, 2016 at 9:30 am

Mary, it’s a little scary how intelligent this dictation software can be sometimes.

This morning I sent an email to a friend thanking them for information about a Jamaican author. The dictation thought that I said thanks for information about the Jamaican offer. Maybe my dictation software knows that I”d like to go of on an island vacation soon! Sent from my iPhone, aren’t you impressed?

G I hope that last comment made sense I’m still playing around with this dictation method on my iPhone. Thanks for your patience. Happy new year to you and yours and thanks especially for remembering us.

OK I’m playing around with my assistive technology again to respond to this comment. I am dictating here so forgive me if I go on and on and on. I am appreciating everybody sending good wishes that I will heal quickly. I’m hoping for that too, and healing new year. Seems like that phrase could work for a lot of different events that went on into thousand 15.
