Hanni + White Sox = Winners!

October 1, 2008 • Posted in Uncategorized by

Heeeeeeeeeeere’s Hanni!White Sox fans who found out Hanni was coming with me to Monday’s game against the Tigers, and then again to last night’s game against the Twins, all told me to make sure she brought home a winner.

And she did it. Figuratively, and literally. Monday’s do-or-die game against the Tigers had a three-hour rain delay, I had to have someone from guest services accompany us outside towards the end of the three hours so Hanni could “empty” before the game started. And, good girl that she is, She did it. Right outside White Sox Park.

I have never, ever endured such a long rain delay Before, but…wow! Was it worth it! A grand slam Monday meant we beat the Tigers and could play the game last night against the Minnesota Twins. Mike couldn’t join us Monday afternoon because he had
to work, and tickets for the Tuesday night game against the Twins sold out in one hour. Hanni to the rescue again! I called the park yesterday morning, asked if they still had any handicapped seating available (Hanni needs the leg room, of course! and…voila! Mike was able to come with us last night, too, along with two other friends.

Thank you, Hanni.. Last night’s do-or-die game against the Twins was one of the best baseball games I’ve ever been to. Two reasons why: first, the pitchers from the Sox and the Twins each pitched outstanding games, real nail biters. That meant the fans were on each & every pitch, so i could judge the pitch count just by the reaction of the crowd. Second, the game was so last-minute that Major League Baseball didn’t have time to reserve special tickets for dignitaries and celebrities., Behind us were a bunch of union plumbers and electricians who had bought last-minute standing-room-only seats — it sure seemed all the fans there were pretty “normal.”
Except for Hanni, I guess.
The game was very, very fun. Well, okay, it was *especially* fun after Thome hit his home run – we ended up winning one to nothing, which means THE WHITE SOX ARE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!

Hanni was pretty excited and animated during both games. After Thome’s home run last night, though, one of the union guys behind me poked my shoulder and yelled (he had to yell, the park was so loud with cheering) into my ear, “Your dog is sleeping!” I felt down, and sure enough, Hanni was curled into a ball, sawing logs. She had done her job, so to speak, and was confident the White Sox would win.

For those of you who aren’t baseball fans, let me try to explain why the White Sox had to win three different games, against three different ballclubs, during the last three days, in order to get into the playoffs this year. No, wait. I’m too exhausted to explain. Let me leave you with a blurb from MLB Headlines instead. I’ll paste it below and close this post with one of my favorite salutations: Go, go, White Sox!

Chicago, IL — (Sports Network) – Alexei Ramirez slugged a grand slam to break a tie in the sixth inning and Chicago steamrolled Detroit, 8-2, in a make-up
contest from U.S. Cellular Field.

The extra tilt was necessary after the clubs’ September 13 game was postponed due to rain. As a result, the White Sox came into action trailing the AL Central-leading
Twins by a half-game.

Jermaine Dye knocked in a pair while A.J. Pierzynski collected two hits and drove in a run for the White Sox (88-74), who will host Minnesota for a one-
game playoff Tuesday to determine the division winner. Whoever comes away victorious will face the AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays beginning Thursday.

Chicago is expected to send John Danks to the hill facing Minnesota’s Nick Blackburn for a 7:30 p.m. (et) start.

“Tomorrow will be just like today,” said Pierzynski. “We win or go home. It’s that simple and I am glad we are playing here.”

You guys were very lucky to be at both games. We had tickets for Monday – well tickets to the original earlier game that was rescheduled to Monday, but couldn’t really justify taking off work to go watch baseball in the middle of the day. As much as I might have liked to! You will have to show us your Sox Pride towel the next time we meet up in person. Wear it to Hackney’s!

Nigel, I knew you had tix for that rainout game and was hoping that the delay on Monday was long enough for you to be able to come after work — trust me, we felt your virtual presence! Hanni wore the black towel around her neck during the game, I’ll have her sport it for you the next time we meet at Hackney’s. And you’re right: we were very, very lucky to be at both games!

I can’t even explain to you how jealous I was when my dad called me last night to tell me that you were bringing him to the game. My heart basically stopped beating in jealousy. But whether I was there or not I was going to watch my boys win. I turned on the TV. I got into my Black sweatpants. Long sleeve white sox shirt with my black white sox hoodie sweatshirt and my white sox hat. My hood on my sweatshirt was up and my Jermaine Dye T-shirt was spread across my lap with the number 23 looking up at me. I got goosebumps when I saw the entire black stadium and then I sat down in my chair in front of the TV to begin the game. I was so out of control during the game that at one point the RA of my dorm building came into my room to see if I was ok. I was blasting thunderstruck and jumping up and down. I told her that it was the tiebreaker between the Twins and the White Sox and she just looked at me with confusion. Being in Boston is amazing. But while baseball is thriving it is not for my Sox and that is painful. I have found it hard to stand celebrating without any of my other Sox fans near by. However, one of my roommates, a Yankees fan, sat with me last night and cheered on my White Sox with me. I can’t explain to you how happy I am that they won! I am so happy that you were able to experience it in the Cell. Don’t Stop Believing White Sox.

37 years a Sox fan, best end to a season

to be there and enjoy it in person.

Best game ever. Ever. Have I mentioned that I love Beth and Hanni?

Our hearts were there with you guys. A game for the ages! And here’s an aside to Claire in Boston. Stay true to YOUR Sahx (as opposed to the Sawx). Your Yankees-fan roommate has the right idea! Rooting for the Sahx (among other wonderful pastimes) made my sojourn in Chicago a joy.

Okay – I don’t even like baseball. That said – it is fun to have both teams from Chicago in the play-offs. Glad that you were able to be in-the-mix Beth!

Not sure what all the fuss is about… since the Sox are going to lose in the first round anyway.

GO CUBS!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Hanni is your good luck charm so to speak! I still remember when we went to visit The Cell during Summer in the City and you 2 went with us as well.

So happy that you were able to be there in person!! Can’t believe you and Hanni stuck out a three hour rain delay!! True fans!! Great call on the handicapped seating! Go Rays! ok not really a fan,but you know they have a great story, I live in Florida, yada, yada, yada! Looking forward to the playoffs- Chicago has to be the best place to be right now!

I made it up on Saturday with Kieran to watch them get thumped by Cleveland. Thought they were probably done. Then they showed up and looked a little bit more like the Sox of ’05. I nearly put my head through the textured ceiling of the family room watching BA make that catch last night (which, unfortunately, Griffey probably would not have had the legs to make). An amazing end to a freaking roller coaster of a season.

You guys need to go to more games. Obviously, you bring with you a better karma. They’re 1 for 3 in my attendance this year, and the victory I saw was against the Mariners, so I don’t know if it actually counts.

Miss you guys, and am jealous of and happy for your good fortune in getting to see both of those games!

Wow, what a great bunch of comments! Would love to respond to each one individually but am emailing you from my hotel room in Little Rock, Hanni & I are here to do a few days of presentations to teachers and students about “Safe & Sound.” I am amazed I figured
out how to do the wireless connection. Now I’m afraid if I stay on too long I’l jinx it and lose the connection. Just seems too good to be true! Just a
few quick individual notes — John, would LOVE to watch (okay, listen to) a game with you at Hackney’s, I’ll be back by the end of the weekend, maybe that
second White Sox home game? And Marilee, I like the Rays story, too, and think they are a very fun team. Too bad they may not make it into the second round
of the playoffs! A note: Dave Wills announced Kane County Cougar games when I worked in ticket sales there back in the 90s (and when Robbie visited and
worked there, too). Now Dave Wills is the play-by-play guy on radio for the Rays. VERY cool!
Aaron, Sandra, Claire, Maybelle, Mike, Patricia…fun to hear from you, thanks for commenting to my blog! Danny, you’d better be careful. Your comment here might have
started a curse on the you-know-who.
