I love my blog readers

Hanni and I were early enough to get the Nancy Faust bobblehead/hands.

All your positive comments to my post about Nancy Faust Day at White Sox Park made me think. Hey, maybe the Chicago Tribune would like to publish a blind woman’s view on Nancy Faust’s departure. After rewriting it a bit, I sent the piece off to the Tribune along with a photo of Hanni, me and our bobble-head Nancy Faust doll at the game.

Well, the Tribune couldn’t use the photo, but they published the essay — As the pipe organ melodies fade away ran in today’s paper. The essay reads pretty much like the blog post, except I had to take out the direct quotes from my memoir, Long Time, No See. You’re not allowed to self-promote in a Tribune op-ed piece!

Your comments to my Safe & Sound blog really do help me figure out which of my posts have struck a chord and might be worth sending out to other publications. Thanks for reading, and for commenting. And if you missed seeing the fruits of your labor in print, never fear: you can read the Chicago Tribune piece online here.

Too bad they couldn’t use that photo — glad they took the story, though!

Beth, Yesterday started with a flurry of phone calls from folks who wanted to make sure I had seen the Trib. Oh my, I am simply overwhelmed over being the subject of your beautifully written baseball experience commentary. Please visit me Sunday. Nancy Faust

Beth – loved this story.

You’re right, Stu – nancyB commented here and encouraged me to send the essay to NPR. It was a good idea! SO good, in fact, that I *did* send it to Chicago Public Radio. They had already done a feature on Nancy Faust, so they declined. From there I tried NPR in DC, I’ve had some essays air nationally on Morning Edition before. Unfortunately, they weren’t interested in this one.
But the Tribune was! Hooray!

I’ll say it again: aw, shucks. Thanks!

Are you going to visit Nancy on Sunday?? Very few people move you to be speechless!!!!

Great story in the Trib, Beth! Marilee’s right…speechless?….how many seconds?

bethfinke On October 1, 2010 at 8:06 am

Busted. You’re right. It probably was only two seconds. Three at best. The rest of the time I was saying “Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Nancy Faust left a comment on my blog! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!”
Fortunately, Hanni was the only one around who had to listen.

Beth,

So glad you take comments seriously. Perhaps your blog is a book? How great is it to spend time with Nancy. Then I want to hear about that. The possibilities are endless.
