Beth Finke’s Top Ten List of Memorable Seeing Eye Wake-Up Songs

January 22, 2020 • Posted in blindness, Seeing Eye dogs, travel by

Editor’s note: Mornings at the Seeing Eye start with a 5:30 a.m. wake-up call: Ttrainers blast music through the intercom system to make sure we’re out of bed feeding our dogs and taking them outside to “empty.” Here’s a list of some of the more memorable selections from the January 2020 class:Clip art of old-time radio

  1. Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” (played the day before we were to be matched with our new dogs)
  2. Michael Buble’s “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet” played the morning of January 8, the day we’d be introduced to our new dogs
  3. “Found a Job” by Talking Heads
  4. Carole King’s “Where You Lead”
  5. ”Follow You, Follow Me” by Genesis
  6. The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” played, you guessed it, Friday
  7. Queen’s “You’re My Best Friend”
  8. “Monday, Monday” by the Mamas and the Papas played on, you guessed it, Monday
  9. Rusted Root’s “Send Me on My Way”
  10. Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound” played this morning in honor of graduates who live close enough to be driven home, they leave today

Wonder what they’ll play tomorrow morning, the day all of us flying home take off with our new Seeing Eye dogs. Got a guess? Leave the name of the song here, and if you come up with the correct last-day song title, who knows? I just might reward you by sending a personal email to let you in on what Speedo’s real name is!

Leaving on a Jet Plane (Babe I got to go) by John Denver

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 6:14 am

Spoiler alert: that one was used on the years I was here training with Whitney, Harper and Hanni (can’t remember what they played in the 90s, when I was here training with first dog Pandora!). John Denver is an odds-on favorite, but pretty sure some of the trainers here were born after John Denver died. Not sure they know the song! Time will tell….

Nancy B On January 22, 2020 at 6:37 am

Well, you are in Jersey…. Come Fly with Me, Frank Sinatra is my vote

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 9:51 am

So right. This one might be my fave.

Ryan On January 22, 2020 at 6:48 am

“Stay Alive” from Hamilton the Musical?

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 9:50 am

Hmmm. We’re all aiming for something abit higher? How about “Blow Them All Away.”

Susan On January 22, 2020 at 6:50 am

Another song from a musical: “So Long, Farewell” from Sound of Music.

Hit the Road Jack – Ray Charles

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 9:46 am

Oh, if only one of the dogs — or one of the people in this class –was named Jack. So great!

Nancy lerman On January 22, 2020 at 7:49 am

Leaving on a Jet Plane by Peter, Paul & Mary. Save travels jetting home to Chicago with Speedo!

Leaving on a jet plane!

Jenny Fischer On January 22, 2020 at 10:13 am

oh- probably should have read the comments before leaving my unoriginal response!

Barbara On January 22, 2020 at 10:51 am

Well, since I failed miserably in the creativity department on my first try, I’m taking another guess. How about “End of the Line,” by the Traveling Wilburys? Or maybe Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again.”

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 4:07 pm

“On the Road Again” is perfect, especially since so many of us in this class (18 out of 20) have had Seeing Eye dgos before and are retrains. One woman in clss is training with her tenth Seeing Eye dog.

Steve Miller Band: Jet Airliner

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 4:06 pm

Okay. I might like this one better than Frank Sinatra “Come Fly With Me.”
And that is a high compliment, I really liked the Frank Sinatra idea. But Steve Miller’s “jet Airliner” is more boisterous and therefore better at waking us up.
I liked Frank S. for the New Jersey connection, but gee whiz. Aren’t there any Bruce Springsteen songs that might work, oo?

Maggy Fouche On January 22, 2020 at 11:08 am

Hey Beth, that’s a nice selection of songs there. At first I thought the songs would be all dog-related, you know like “Who Let the Dogs Out,” How Much is That Doggy in the Window,” and “You Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog” … you get the idea. I’m sure none of these will be the selection for tomorrow!

I’ve really been enjoying reading your dispatches from Seeing Eye Dog Land. And looking forward to meeting Speedo!

Maggy

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 4:03 pm

What a coincidence. Speedo is looking forward to meeting you, too, Maggy. Any chance you’ll be joining the Thursday memoir class at Grace Place again? We’d love to have you…

Shelley Finke On January 22, 2020 at 11:24 am

Haha, well, being that Leaving On A Jet Plane is just TOO OBVIOUS, I’ll guess Learning to Fly in honor of Tom Petty.

Beth On January 22, 2020 at 4:01 pm

I llike it. Double meaning, as all of us with our new Seeing Eye dogs are “learning to fly” as in taking off and getting around safely again at home. Plus with our flights tomorrow, we’re learning to fly together on airplanes as wel.
Well done, Shelley!

Final song title will be “Leavin’ on Jet Plane” bi John Denver

Gretchen Livingston On January 22, 2020 at 8:00 pm

Leaving on a Jet Plane?

Not very original and I am sure others have called it too.

Good luck!

Pat Miller On January 23, 2020 at 6:21 am

“Leaving on a Jet Plane” by Peter, Paul & Mary or John Denver.

Check out the song “I’m from New Jersey” by John Gorka.

Nancy Faust On January 23, 2020 at 8:42 am

What an exciting time for you and all who know and love you.
Welcome home !
Can Joe and I each pick a song ?
His is
Theme from Friends ” I’ll be There For You”
Mine is -” Happy Together”

Robin On January 23, 2020 at 9:46 am

I’d also guess “Leaving on a Jet Plane” but some folks take a train or car
Soooo, I’m gonna guess “Farewell, So Long” from the Sound of Music

Michael Graff On January 24, 2020 at 8:28 am

Read the lyrics of “Leavin on a Jet Plane.” An entertainer is departing from his partner for a tour. He or she basically confesses not being true. Promises to think of, and sing for that person and pledges to wear that person’s wedding ring upon returning.

OK, when he comes home he’ll wear her wedding ring? I’m left unconvinced of his sincerity. I speculate that when he returns on tour the ring might come off for his own convenience.

I think the songwriter needs to convince us through actions rather than insincere lyrics. Those are my cynical thoughts.
